much without being on a tour.." MK California
"The type of travel that we experienced on this trip is an excellent way to go, and probably the best way to go, in my opinion. The only other trip abroad I have ever been on was an organized tour with a tour company. It was enjoyable and a wonderful experience, but it had some drawbacks due to being with the organized group. Going independently is so much easier to do in Great Britain, maybe because there is no language difference.
It can be very difficult to find a tour that will match the dates that you can be away. When you go independently, you can pick when you leave and when you come back. Equally important, you can choose what you go to, when you go to it, and how long you spend there. You can make changes to your schedule as needed. You can cut out things. You can add things. It is very easy to get around in England, at least in the areas that we were in. I am sure the same applies to lots of other areas of England. The London tube underground connections & British Rail trains were very good. There are 25,000 taxi drivers in London, and the ones we met were very nice and very knowledgeable. Using trains, the underground, taxis, and buses is just a way of life there. Most people uses public transportation. I was glad to not have to bother with renting a car or figuring out where to go or where to park, etc., while driving on the left side of the road. Many people seemed glad you were there and wanted to be helpful. Overall, the great benefit of traveling like this is the flexibility and freedom that it allows. I am not saying to skip all forms of paid tour guides and to try to do it all on your own. We greatly enjoyed and benefited from paid guides at places like Canterbury Cathedral, Cambridge University, Oxford, and the Cotswold villages, and could have done more of that if we had had time. We did not, by any means, do this travel all on our own, neither before or during the trip. I wish to acknowledge that the foundation of our trip was the tremendously helpful advice on many different aspects as well as arrangements we got through Kathy Lancy." RB South Carolina
Thank you for arranging such a great tour of England for our group! I cannot believe how much we saw in the space of two weeks because of all your advice and help with planning the itinerary. The accomodation was excellent, especially the four nights in London, and the travel passes for the tube and bus made getting around there so easy. We were also able to make maximum use of the Britrail passes that you got for us. Our bus drivers, Mike and Chris, couldn't have been better. Nothing was too much trouble for them, and they continually added information that they thought would be of interest as we drove along. The four things that seem to have most impressed the Americans in the group were the trip's fantastic value for money, the location of the hotels, the ease and availability of public transport, and the wonderful weather we had. I know that many of them cannot wait to go back!

"When searching for help with a trip to England, Wales and Ireland, I found Swanton British Travel. All other resources I found offered only pre-planned tours that didn't meet my needs and desires for my trip. They were also expensive. In working with Kathy at Swanton, I was able to customize my trip based on where I wanted to be, things I wanted to see, convenience and cost. She made it so easy. She took the time to listen to me and used her knowledge and common-sense approach to tailor the accommodations and transportation so everything fit like pieces of a puzzle. She did a pre-trip phone briefing to discuss final details and preparations and called shortly after my trip was completed to check in. Thank you for helping make my trip - the trip of a lifetime. I can't recommend her services enough. She's amazing. I want to take another trip just so I can have her help me again."

There are two things that people who are travelling to the British Isles should know:
1. You SHOULD have an experienced travel advisor on your side. 2. You DO NOT have to take an organized group vacation to have a great time, see all the sights, and experience the best that these places have to offer. My husband and I took our first "big trip" together in June 2011. For both us of, this was the first trip to Europe and the first time flying. We were both nervous about our lack of international travel experience, but after I found Swanton British Travel online, Kathy eased my fears. She booked sensibly priced hotels for us in very central location in four cities (Dublin, London, Inverness, and Edinburgh). She also ordered our BritRail Flexi Passes and told us how to use them. I was very comfortable knowing that I could call her with any problems we might encounter on the trip. She gave us a lot of useful information on city layouts, foreign currency, and public transportation. As for travelling on our own terms, I am so glad that my husband and I planned our trip in a way that allowed us to take adventures and change our minds. We spent our first afternoon in Ireland on a breathtaking 6-mile cliff walk, not something we could have done on an organized vacation. We did spend two days in Ireland with booked day trips, which we chose upon our arrival in the country - one day to the north coast, one day to the west coast. Both were amazing. In London, we easily travelled the city end-to-end using the Tube (easy even for people who have never used public transportation). We walked all the way to the top of St. Paul's Cathedral and meandered along the Jubilee Walkway, stopping anywhere and everywhere we liked. In Inverness, we enjoyed walking all through the town, taking the local bus to Culloden Battlefield, and walking to Clava Cairn, an ancient burial ground. We took another local bus to Loch Ness, where we cruised on the "Nessie Hunter." We walked the length of Edinburgh, from Edinburgh Castle to the top of Arthur's Seat in Holyrood Park. Our trip was a great adventure, and we had the opportunity to change our daily plans based on our own mood. Again, I would definitely book through Kathy again and take all of her advice to heart for an unforgettable trip. MW Tennessee
